Description
The Glasgow Haskell Compiler is a state-of-the-art, open source, compiler and
interactive environment for the functional language Haskell. Highlights:

* GHC supports the entire Haskell 98 language plus a wide variety of
extensions.
* GHC works on several platforms including Windows and a few varieties of
Unix, and a few different processor architectures. There are detailed
instructions for porting GHC to a new platform. Which doesn't work.
* GHC has extensive optimisation capabilities, including inter-module
optimisation.
* GHC compiles Haskell code either by using an intermediate C compiler
(GCC), or by generating native code on most currently supported
platforms. The interactive environment compiles Haskell to
bytecode, and supports execution of mixed bytecode/compiled
programs.
* Profiling is supported, both by time/allocation and various kinds of
heap profiling.
* GHC comes with a minimal range of libraries, but a wide range of
additional libraries are available as separate packages, including
the full set of the Haskell Platform.

Log message:
Enable the new bootstrapper.
To my surprise, it just works, and there are no hs library signature
changes, so there's no need to touch all the hs-* ports.
Next steps will be (in no particular order): enable PIE, update to
ghc 8.4, kill W^X, debug and fix the SIG(SEGV|TRAP|BUS|ILL) problems
with tehmplate haskell seen by some people.

Log message:
The magic in testsuite/mk/test.mk for detecting which library ways
are available fails badly if the ghc-prim package contains more
than one entry in the library-dirs: field, which is currently the
case for our ghc port.
Only check for the existance of vertain files in the first entry
of the library-dirs: field to re-enable tons of previously disabled
tests and to get rid of stupid "/bin/sh: [: ... unexpected
operator/operand" errors.
This should be fixed for real at both our side (don't include the
same directory twice in the library-dirs: field) and upstream (don't
rely on the library-dirs: field only containing one directory).

Still too much noise for espie@, so add -Wno-expansion-to-defined.
2017-04-30 15:33:26 by Matthias Kilian | Files touched by this commit (1)
Log message:
Suppress a lot of (not all) warnings when using clang:
ghc uses cc for generating object files from assembler files and
passes the CONF_CC_OPTS_STAGE? flags to it, which clang doesn't
like, so add -Wno-unused-command-line-argument to the flags passed
to cc if it's clang.
To let this work for the bootstrap compiler, properly CONFIGURE_ENV
when installing the bootstrap (in post-patch:). This also makes the
hack patching the bootstrap/bin/ghc script in post-patch: obsolete.
prodded by (and with some hints from) espie@
~here are still a lot of warnings, most about macros #defined in
storage/ClosureMacros.h. Those should be fixed in a separate step,
probably after an update to ghc-8.

give the system a chance to figure out clang (their detection method is lame
as the patch shows).
you'll need to wait for a bootstrap/rebootrap yourself so this is actually
effective.
(should cut down *a lot* on the insane number of warnings produced due to
unknown compile options on a clang system)

Mark ghc as wxneeded for now.
A real fix would be to remove PROT_EXEC from mmapForLinker() in
rts/Linker.c and to flip PROT_WRITE / PROT_EXEC  in loadObj_()
when it's done, but this requires a little bit more time for
testing (turnaround times for building and testing ghc aren't
that funny).

Log message:
Disable stripping of hs libraries in Cabal.
It appears that strip --strip-unneeded sometimes strips too much.
For example, if you take libHStf-random-0.5-926BwEbiHzi7pBkp4dTxOe.a
from the hs-tf-random package on i386 and run strip --strip-unneeded
on it, the T Threefish_256_Process_Block symbol (from threefish_block.o)
is stripped, which shouldn't happen. Note: this specific case applies
to i386, not to amd64. But...
doug@ reported a similar problem for the haskell library texmath,
which we don't yet have in the ports tree, and he made some even
more weird observation: texmath contains the two C source files
cbits/{key,val}ToASCII.c, defining the symbols keylookup (in
keyToAscii.c) and toASCIILut (in valToASCII.c), where both are just
some lookup tables. With strip --strip-unneeded enabled, the resulting
libHStexmath-*.a archive is missing keylookup. doug@ then concatenated
both .c files to a new one and changed the .cabal file of texmath
to use that single one instead, and suddenly the symbol keylookup
no longer was removed.
I'll try to make a port for texmath (which would be required anyway
for porting pandoc) so people who want help to debug this don't
have to build all the haskell goo themselves.

Don't throw away output of {,un}register.sh (used in @exec and @unexec).
In theory, those should never fail, but espie@ frequently noticed failure
of register.sh (with a broken / incomplete ghc package db resulting in
hs libraries like Prelude or Distribution/Simple not found).
No bump yet, because it only adds spam during pkg_add.

Bugfix udpate to ghc-7.8.4.
Also, use a new(er) bootstrapper; note that we have to use 7.8.3
for this, because if the built ghc and the bootstrapper have identical
versions, things will fail badly. May be it's not the ghc but the
cabal version which is problematic, but at the moment, I really
don'y call about *this* problem.
Still marked as broken. I hope to send promised diffs and new ports
for discussion tomorrow and then enable ghc and haskell-platform

Log message:
Switch back to compiling Setup.l?hs and running the resulting program
instead of using runghc (the interpreter).
This is a *workaround* for the following two symptoms:
- Setup.hs: waitForProcess: resource exhausted (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
- Setup.hs: fd:15: hGetContents: illegal operation (Inappropriate
ioctl for device)
Note that this is not a *fix*. I'm sure there's some misbehaving
signal handler, either in runghc/ghci or in the ghc runtime library.
(No, it's *not* rts/posix/Signals.c:generic_handler(); I patched
it to preserve errno, but it didn't help)
Until I find the bug, it's better to let bulk builds pass without
(or with less) errors.
ok (with the workaround) espie@

Using vfork(2) is evil, but adding a line like
#define fork vfork
and then apparently call fork (in cbits/runProcess.c, IIRC) is
even worse.
This patch appears to `fix' (or hide?) the ENODEV errors spotted
by landry@ during bulk builds.
A complete GHC update will follow soon, so there's no reason for a bump.

Update to ghc-6.12.3 (bugfix release), plus some minor changes:
- Use integer-gmp again.
- Cleanout the extracted bootstrap directory right after installing it
to save some disk space.
- Use ${MAKE_ENV} instead ${MODGHC_SETUP_CONF_ENV} in ghc.port.mk (in
do-configure, use both).
- Don't compile Setup.l?hs, just use the interpreter (runghc) in
ghc.port.mk. This speeds up the build of most ports depending on
ghc and using a cabal-style build.

Log message:
Update to ghc-6.12.3 (bugfix release), plus some minor changes:
- Use integer-gmp again.
- Cleanout the extracted bootstrap directory right after installing it
to save some disk space.
- Use ${MAKE_ENV} instead ${MODGHC_SETUP_CONF_ENV} in ghc.port.mk (in
do-configure, use both).
- Don't compile Setup.l?hs, just use the interpreter (runghc) in
ghc.port.mk. This speeds up the build of most ports depending on
ghc and using a cabal-style build.
Necessary bumps and WANTLIB changes in ports using ghc will follow
later this evening.

New libc major => new bootstrapping binaries.
Since the new bootstrapper has a new name (ghc-6.12.2.20100530),
the ABI of some libraries included in GHC will change, possibly
breaking all other libraries, so expect some additional bumps soon.
Yes, this *is* ridiculous. If you want to live in peace, don't use
GHC.

Change ghc.port.mk to allow addition of flags to MODGHC_SETUP_PROG by
just setting MODGHC_SETUP_CONF_ARGS (which is now empty by default).
Add dblatex-created documentation.
While here, use our INSTALL* macros where possible to get correct
permissions (noticed by dcoppa@). This does *not* fix the permissions
of libraries and interface files installed by Cabal-based tools,
because the permissions are hard-coded in Cabal, and I'm not going
to touch and fix Cabal ever, because IMHO it's completely broken
by design. (If you want to read some of this madness, have a look
at libraries/Cabal/Distribution/Compat/CopyFile.hs or even
libraries/Cabal/Distribution/Simple/Install.hs)
Expect some breakage of depending ports (at least of devel/darcs) and
some necessary WANTLIB changes, which will be fixed soonish.

Log message:
Remove the native_bootstrap pseudo flavor. It's dangerous, because
the APIs of GHCs libraries depend on the version of the bootstrapping
compiler (and probably on the output of pom(6) and the amount of
active vulcanos in iceland).
See http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/4012#comment:3 for
details.
THIS ALSO MEANS THAT IF YOUR BUILD FAILS, YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE
CLEAN AND START FROM SCRATCH! NEVER EVER TRY TO RESTART THE BUILD
OR THE LIBRARY ABIS WILL CHANGE! (Sorry for yelling)
Bump PKGNAME-main, since people may already have built ghc with
native_bootstrap.

Log message:
Update to 6.12.2.
Many thanks to Darrin Chandler and dcoppa@ for testing, reporting about
broken stuff, missing dependencies here and in ports depending on ghc.
Notes and rants:
- Bootstrapping is done using precompiled binaries, since .hc
bootstrapping still doesn't work. I really hate this.
THIS MEANS THAT GHC IS NOW AND WILL STAY LEGACY-ONLY (i386 and amd64)
At least until someone fixes it. I tried for more than two year
(well, only in my spare time and during my vacations) and failed.
- libgmp is currently disabled, because I didn't yet hack the GHC build
system to use the system libgmp instead of the patched one included
in GHC.
- The haddock ncluded in the ghc distfile is replaced by the version
of haddock found in devel/haddock. Haddock itself is @commented
in the ghc PLIST. Unfortunately, this needs an ugly hack that
introduces an otherwise useless pseudo flavor `no_deps' in
devel/haddock.
- CLDouble has been removed from GHC some time ago, because it was
an alias for double (AFAIK there's now support for long double
in GHC). As this isn't a really big problem, it currently breaks
c2hs, which I'll mark broken temporarily before committing the
ghc update.
- The external codeset defaults to latin1 (suggested by Simon Marlow)
and can be overridden by setting the HS_ENCODING to any codeset
supported by libiconv.
- ghc.port.mk still needs some love, especially for letting a port add
additional parameters to certain invocations of ${MODGHC_SETUP_PROG}.

- libgmp is currently disabled, because I didn't yet hack the GHC build
system to use the system libgmp instead of the patched one included
in GHC.

bootstrapping still doesn't work.

Drop maintainership.
If you have to work on ghc-HEAD but can't get the ghc-HEAD souces, there's
no point to work on it at all.
If you complain about missing portability, and all those Haskell guys agree,
but at the same time delay bootstrapping to the next release whenever a
release happens, there's no expectation for getting bootstrapping back at
all.

Log message:
Update from maintainer Don Stewart (dons at cse.unsw.edu.au):
- Updated to ghc-6.0
- Halved (roughly) the build time; by using the 6.0 in-tree build
we only have to build the 6.0 libraries once. Also we only build the
necessary parts of the bootstrap compiler.
- The ugly lndir/stage1 build is also gone.
- The full ghc regression suite is now part of the port!
"make regress" will run around 3000 regress tests.
- The regression tests revealed that the C foreign function
- The Makefile is simplified, using more default targets
- The documentation is updated to 6.0
- I put some of the 5.04.3 patches into ghc cvs, so they are
now obsolete.
Unfortunately, this lets mozilla back in the race for longest
package building time...
